The end of 20th Century and beginning of 21st Century South Africa saw Nissan and Subaru markets skyrocket, as the Gt-R and WRX STi became street racing magnets. CarZar reminisces on street racing legends, Nissan Skyline Gt-R and Subaru Impreza WRX STi.
With inflated egos about cars, Nissan and Subaru fanatics debate the racing legends’ power and performance levels, in a bumper to bumper race.
The Skyline circles a peaked torque of 384 Nm at 4,000 rpm with a flat curve while the Nissan’s rev increases. Gt-R power climbs to 320 kW while the engine redlines at 6,800 rpm. Nissan enthusiasts therefore claim its first place after a change to third gear.
Although the Subaru has a bit of edge with power swanking 300 kW at 6,000 rpm and torque spiralling 407 Nm at 4,000 rpm, slight modifications to the Nissan would change the Subaru’s destiny by the time it reaches third gear. The problem with using the Subaru in drag racing, is its small engine. However, the WRX STi rambles more speed, running to 250 kph on the clock while the Gt-R limits its tempo to 180 kph – allowing the Impreza to turbo past the Skyline.
If you’re thinking long distance racing, the Impreza would not be as quick off the line. Although the STi specifications meet the drivetrain criteria for street racing, the Skyline’s rear-wheel drive helps the Gt-R emphasize more power on the road – speeding its chances to break the finishing line banner. The Gt-R’s restrictive airbox and exhaust also allows for a mild boost – something which the Impreza will not be able to withstand, even with slight modifications. For the Gt-R, the sky is definitely the line.
The Nissan Skyline Gt-R and Subaru Impreza WRX STi both have advantages on the streets. The Skyline’s higher power allows for excellent performance handling and acceleration in a drag race; however the Impreza’s high-rolling torque allows Subaru to handle turns better during a circuit race.
So which street racer do you think will get smoked first the Nissan GT-R or Subaru STi?
