Shoppers – start your engines! Starting today, Sandton City, the mega-mall situated on South Africa’s ‘Richest Square Mile’, is combining two of our favourite things to entice mall-goers through its doors: technology, and free stuff!
The mall, in association with Jacaranda FM, is giving its devoted ‘shopees’ a chance to R40 000 in prizes! The Sandton City ‘Secret Shopper’ competition runs this week from Monday, August 28th, to Friday, September 1st.

The competition works like this: each day, a ‘secret shopper’ will be hidden a different store in Sandton City. They will then broadcast a live on the Sandton City Facebook page. The Facebook Live broadcast will give mall-goers clues about the store they’re currently hiding in: anyone who thinks they recognise the store should SMS Sandton and their name and answer number to 37 942 (an SMS will cost R1.50). If they’re right, they could win thousands of rands in Sandton City shopping vouchers!
Sandton City, home to 401 stores, opened its doors in 1973. Retailers with floor space in Sandton City include Prada, Versace, Gucci and Louis Vuitton. There is also a six-metre tall statue of former President Nelson Mandela, cast in bronze, in the Nelson Mandela Square. The popular shopping destination also recently unveiled free, unlimited WiFi connection for shoppers.
But there’s a new kid in town.
Sandton City’s mantle as the most popular mall in Johannesburg was challenged by the opening of the R3,2 billion Mall of Africa, in 2016. Located in Midrand, the super-mall spans over 131 000 square-metre, and forms the heart of Waterfall City, an ambitious attempt to build a new, R16 billion city for the super-wealthy between Johannesburg and Pretoria, which the developers are hoping will bring in close to R135 billion for the economy!
