With many concerns over public transportation, it seems like South Africa can act on one of many public issues. And it looks like much thought has been given into the City of Johannesburg’s new facelift.

“We are addressing the ill effects of the past and implementing programmes that link residents to economic opportunities and bring quality public transport services closer to the people,” said Johannesburg Transport MMC‚ Nonhlanhla Makhuba.

Public transportation will be taking headlight, with a massive R400-million upgrade expected to be completed at Johannesburg’s iconic central railway station, Park Station, by October 2018 – and the evolution of the Station is already axling.

According to TimesLIVE, the Kazerne transport facility will:

1. Integrate local and regional transport.
2. Be used as a rank for host long-distance and cross-border taxis and buses, travelling from Johannesburg to other SADC countries.
3. Be used as a rank to host long-distance and cross-border taxis and buses, travelling from Johannesburg to other SADC countries.
4. Witness the construction of new Rea Vaya routes – more specifically to areas which are currently not serviced by Johannesburg’s rapid bus transport system.

The benefit?

The advantage of having new Rea Vaya routes is that citizens of Alexandra, Sandton, Wynberg and Orange Grove will be able to boast about almost 150 dedicated Rea Vaya buses taking route through their local roads.

At the same time, pedestrians – particularly the poor – will no longer have to walk long distances to reach alternative modes of transport.
