Think back to your street racing days. You had fun, unleashed your inner tyke and rebelled against the norms of society… on the roads, of course. CarZar reminisces on the good old days when Honda VTEC took Volkswagen VR6 to the streets.
Here is a bit of background about the racing legends.
Honda started tinkering with the Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (VTEC) system during the early 1980s – evolutionizing its internal combustion that sparked talks among other car brands, such as Volkwagen. Honda’s first VTEC boosted efficiency and power in small engines, and used two camshaft profiles for economy and high performance. These VTEC variants disturbed the global car market. For strong performance, Honda’s engineers ensured the mechanical system changed the valve’s operation for low and top speed engines – introducing a VTEC engine that offered top performance on the streets; running 110 to 120 kW horsepower and a spin of 114 to 122 nm torque at 4,500 rpm.
Volkswagen’s VR6 was also a 1980s auto-born that formed part of the ‘internal combustion engine’ family. The German VR-inline engine improved Volkswagen’s street performances with enhanced camshafts, compression ratios and improved emission parts. With the VR-motor, VW saw horsepower increase to 130 kW, while torque pivoting to 245 nm at 3,200 rpm. Although reaching old age, the VR6 has a proven track record of durability and reliability.
However, take your mind on a road trip through the streets. When you think drag racing, you think ‘fun’. What is a car race without fun?
Drag racers are all about talking ‘top variants’ and ‘high-end mechanics’. Although this plays a major factor in winning first place, it’s more than just that.
It’s not just the speed, expensive mechanics or handling that does the rambling on the road, it is the intangible criteria of ‘fun’ – a vital check for your model’s racing listing. A happy machine is like a startup – enthusiastic, goal-orientated, determined, work hard and plays harder… In the same way, a first place ride needs to drive firmly but not take itself too seriously. It needs to be able to find humor in off-road nudges – definitely something to think about.
Go down memory lane and take the Honda VTEC and Volkswagen VR6 back to the streets, once again. Which car do you think would rack up first place?
