Nelson Mandela Day is an international day of remembrance of Tata Madiba, for the lifetime service of peace and humanity in South Africa and the rest of the world.

Mandela day was launched on his 90th birthday celebration on the 18th of July 2009.  To celebrate this day, one gives up 67 minutes of your time to do good and give back to others. By devoting 67 minutes of your time – one minute for every year of Mandela’s public service – you can make a small gesture of solidarity with humanity and a step towards a global movement for good.

1. 67 Minute Clean-Up

There are many clean up campaigns throughout South Africa that you can participate in. One example is in the Blomvlei area in Cape Town where a clean-up operation will take place on 18 July 2017. Take action, find a clean-up campaign in your area today, or simply start your own! It is your hands, be the difference you want to see in your community.

2. Join The Million Meal Challenge By Stop Hunger Now

Stop Hunger Now is hosting events such as Follow The Sun meal packaging starting on the 13th of July (Wednesday) to the 20th of July (Wednesday) at Grand West Casino and Entertainment World. This great worldwide initiative goal is to pack two million meals in South Africa and 10 million meals across the globe. If you are not in Cape Town, you can still help by finding out the Stop Hunger Now campaign near your area.

3. Serve Soup To The Homeless

You can spend your 67 minutes cooking and serving soup to the homeless. There are many campaigns that need volunteers like you to help out. Ladies of Love run a campaign where you can spend your 67 minutes handing out warm soup to the homeless at Mandela Rhodes Place. If you would like to have an input, but won’t be available, you can donate money or winter clothing items to help the homeless to be well-fed and warm. This making a difference campaign will be held on the 18th of July at 12 pm. Donations are welcome anytime.

4.  Donate Toys To Children’s Ward Hospital

Kids and toys are best friends.  Make a child’s day by visiting your nearest local hospital – gifting the children with toys and, your time. There is nothing that makes a child feel more special than someone giving them the love and attention they deserve. Make your 67 minutes on Mandela Day memorable, put a smile on a child’s face.

5.  Donate Blankets To Street Kids

Giving street kids blankets would help keep them warm this winter. On Mandela day, help prevent someone from catching the flu or even worse, pneumonia. If you have blankets to share, make sure to share with homeless children. Giving back all begins with you.
